The first week of June was cold but sunny, the second warm, and the rest not quite so warm. Rain registered (unofficially) on the 17th was 54.5 mm. That was close to the record June day of rainfall at Manilla Post Office: 55.1 mm on 18/6/1930.
The early morning minimum of the 17th was extremely warm, at 12.8°: the fifth warmest for June. There were 12 frosts (as usual) but none was severe. On two mornings, fog persisted past nine o-clock.

Most monthly averages were near normal. Daily minima were up one degree, and morning dew points down one degree.
While lower than in June 2013, the total rainfall of 74.4 mm is high: in the 82nd percentile. Among rainfall totals for more than one month, there are no serious shortages. The lowest percentile value (11th) is for the 24-month total of 996 mm.

Nearly all raw anomalies for the latest month are nearer to normal than the partially-smoothed anomalies of the autumn months. They are also quite close to the smoothed values of a year ago. Rainfall stands alone as a high value.

The trend of mean temperature rose from zero at first to stay at 0.5 deg from 2004 to 2010, then rose again.
The trends of daily maximum and daily minimum temperature anomalies were mirror-reversed about the mean trend line. The maximum line reached a peak in 2003 and a trough in 2009, while the minimum line did the reverse. The subsoil temperature anomaly trend was slightly low in 2004 and was high in 2014.

Raw anomaly values for June 2014 have nothing in common with the droughty conditions at the end of 2013. Daily maximum temperature and rainfall (top left graph) are both normal. A return to a moist climate, like that in spring 2011, shows as cloudy skies (top right), high dew point (mid left), and narrow temperature range (mid right). Daily minimum temperature (lower left) has moved independently to a high value (that is, very warm nights). Only subsoil temperature (lower right) has jumped back to warm 2013 values, after a period of normalcy.

Fully smoothed data (red)

December 2013 is now the latest fully-smoothed data point. It seems to mark the point of lowest rainfall and dew point anomalies in recent months. In other variables (except daily minimum temperature) December continued a retreat from recent extreme (drought) values.

In four short  rainy spells, nights were very warm and days cool. Otherwise, the weather was normal but rather cloudy. There were eight rain days (normally six). The wettest had 17 mm, which is normal. Only nine mornings were frosty, when normally there are thirteen.

Comparing June months

Most average values were near normal for June. However, the nights were warm, the daily temperature range narrow, and the skies cloudy. The month was not extremely wet and cloudy like June last year.
The total rainfall of 40.2 mm is in the 55th percentile, close to the average.. Taking rainfall totals for more than one month, only the 12-month and 15-month totals are serious shortages (7th percentile). The 3-month total (71 mm) is in the 12th percentile. Other totals have higher percentile values, and most totals for 36 months or more are above normal.

While days were only a little cooler than normal in June, moisture variables were extremely high. Rainfall, cloudiness and daily temperature range went beyond the blue lines. Cloudiness reached a record for this data set.
Both daily minimum temperature and subsoil temperature were also very high.

The fully-smoothed data point for December 2012 shows a drift towards normal from the mild drought of October.

June 2013: Extreme Cloud and Rain

The first weeks were warmer than usual, including a Queen’s Birthday Saturday that reached a pleasant 23°. In contrast, Tuesday the 25th reached only 9.7° making it the fifth coldest day of the century.

There were hardly any sunny mornings in the month, and most were close to overcast. Cloud kept the nights warm, limiting the number of frosts to only eight. The night of the 7th had a minimum of 12.6°, nine degrees above normal.

The wettest of 10 rain days had 38.0 mm, almost as high as a 38.2 mm reading in June 2008.

Extreme cloudiness and rain lead this month’s climate values. Having 73% of mornings with cloud covering more than half the sky makes this the cloudiest month in the 21st century by far. July 2010 and March 2011 reached only 61%. This month’s figure is over twice the June average of 33% cloudy mornings.

With a rainfall total of 98.0 mm, this is the eighth wettest June in 131 years. The wettest was June 1920, with 173 mm. That was the first of a cluster of four extremely wet Junes, ending with June 1931, that were among the ten wettest. Only eight years ago, June 2005 was the sixth wettest on record, at 109 mm.
This month’s rainfall defers any shortage. Among totals for more than one month, the driest is the 34th percentile for the last three months (Total 3-month rain: “only” 116 mm).
The mean daily maximum temperature, 17.3°, is just 0.5° below normal, but the mean daily minimum, 5.7°, is very high, 2.9° above normal (as in 2005, 2008 and 2009). The subsoil remains very warm.
