Wet cloudy October 2011 began cold

October began very cold throughout NSW, southern Queensland and central Australia. At Manilla the maximum on Sunday the 2nd was only 13.4°: 12.6° below normal, and the coldest October day in 13 years. During the month, the air slowly warmed up to normal. The subsoil was also very cold in the second week, but only slightly cool later.
Rain fell every few days except for the week beginning on Sunday the 16th. Most rain came as showers or storms. The highest reading was 22.6 mm on the 26th. In 10 rain days (3 more than usual) the total was 97.4 mm.

Mean temperature readings and the Dew Point were well below normal. The average October temperature has fallen steadily since October 2007.  While that month was rather dry and sunny, October 2002 was much drier (15 mm rain) and sunnier (only 6% cloudy days).
Fifty-eight percent cloudy mornings is a record high value for October, equal with last year, and more than twice normal.
The rainfall of 97.4 mm is very high, in the 84th percentile for October (Average: 58.1 mm.). Most rainfall totals for groups of months are now high. Among groups of 108 months or less, the driest is the 30-month total which is not very dry: in the 37th percentile. In that 30 months there was 1516 mm of rain, just 100 mm below normal.

October days were very cool: no days went above 30°, when usually seven days do, and the 16th, at 14.2°, was 13° below normal. The following night (the only frost) was 10° below normal. A day earlier, overcast skies brought an extremely narrow daily temperature range (2.3°) on the 15th.
Rain fell on 8 days. The highest reading was 20.4 mm on the 4th.

The mean daily maximum temperature (24.2°) was the lowest for October on this 12-year record. The mean daily mean temperature (17.7°) was low, but the mean daily minimum temperature (11.2°) was normal. The mean daily temperature range (13.1°) was a record low value.
Mean subsoil temperature was remarkably low: 17.4° against a 12-year October mean of 19.4°. The month ended with subsoil temperature (then 18.8°) trailing 22 days later than its usual date.
There were more cloudy mornings (58%) than in any October on this record. The mean early morning Dew Point (9.6°) was also high.
The rainfall of 85.4 mm is in the 80th percentile for October, far above the long-term average of 58 mm. Totals for groups of months up to six months are now all above the median, as is the thirty-year total.

Weather log October 2009

The first two weeks of October were cool – as cool as September, and no warmer than late August. There was little rain, low humidity and strong winds. The sub-soil temperature (at 750 mm) also remained low, not reaching 18° until the 18th, two weeks later than usual. Some cotton plantings suffered.
A warm spell came on the 20th, with the maximum on the 23rd (35.4°) being 8° above normal. By contrast, a rainy day on the 26th reached only 18.1°, more than 9° below normal. That day was the first in 33 days to have more than 5 mm of rain. Ten rain days (usually 7) brought 47.4 mm for the month.
Seven days began with a brown dust haze, adding to one in July, three in August, and seven in September.

Mean temperatures were close to normal. The mean humidity (early morning Dew Point: 4.3°) was low: lower than in 2007, but higher than in 2002 (3.3°). The percentage of cloudy mornings was normal.
The rainfall total, 47 mm, is in the 39th percentile for October, just 6 mm below the median (53 mm). Despite early worries, most rainfall totals improved. The only serious shortage affects the 6-month total. At 164 mm, it is in the 7th percentile.
Totals for periods longer than nine months are normal: the lowest is the ten-year total, which is in the 21st percentile. From November 1999 Manilla has had 6133 mm of rain, against the median 6393 mm. That is a shortfall of only 26 mm per year.

Weather log October 2008

October began fine and very warm, with 32° days and 17° nights. Wet days from the 4th to the 6th brought warm nights at first, followed by a very cold day (19.2°) and night (4.4°). From the 10th to the 21st normal temperatures prevailed. Then a strong southerly made days and nights 10° colder again. The night of the 23rd was 9.0° cooler than normal. The month was frost-free, however.
Calmer, sunny weather returned, with the last day the hottest, at 34.5°.
The seventh rain day of the month brought 52 mm. Rain drove in horizontally during a south-westerly gale after 5pm on Tuesday the fourteenth. This was reported, with a photo of broken trees, in the “Manilla Express” (21/10/08). The gale was a gustfront fanning out from the downburst of a thunderstorm. Storm gustfront gales in this area often blow from the south-west. Within minutes, cold air is dumped on the ground from a height of more than 5 kilometres. The downburst brings the strong south-west winds found there down to ground level.

Unlike last October, which was remarkably warm and had a high daily temperature range, this October had temperatures near normal, with rather warm nights bringing a lower daily temperature range. Both humidity and cloudiness were slightly above normal.

Manilla has had a lot of rain.
The high rainfall total, 97 mm, is on the 83rd percentile for October. Only 21 recorded Octobers were wetter, including October 1999 (104mm) and 2000 (110 mm). Most rainfall totals for several months together are now above the median (the 50th percentile). The total for 2 months (September and October) is in the 82nd percentile, 3 months in the 71st, 4 months in the 60th, 5 months in the 63rd, and 6 months in the 50th percentile. Rainfall totals for longer periods, up to 60 months, are above the median with only two exceptions: the totals for 9 months (42nd percentile) and for 30 months (35th percentile).

October 2007 warm, with rain

October was very warm. All but four days had daily maximum temperatures above normal. Night time minima varied at first, and then settled on the warm side. As a result, the seven-day mean temperature was a couple of degrees above normal nearly all the time.

The month began in a dry spell that reached 50-days before good rain fell on the 12th. After that, there was another 12-day dry spell. The dry spells had clear skies, very low humidity, and high daily temperature ranges of around 20°.
By the end of the month, however, a lot of rain had fallen, totalling 52 mm. It fell mainly in four days, with 17 mm on the 26th. The final wet spell was uncomfortably humid.

This October was the warmest in nine years. Daily minima were 1.2° above average, daily means were 1.7° above average, and daily maxima were 2.3° above average. The high daily maximum value of 29.4° is usually seen in November, not October.

The rainfall of 52 mm was near the long-term average of 58 mm for October. Similar amounts fell in October 2005 and 2006. October 2000 had been wet (110 mm) and October 2002 dry (15 mm).
The total rainfall for the two months ending in October 2007 was rather low compared to the same two months in other years. At 54 mm, it was on the 19th percentile: that is, there has been less than 54 mm rainfall in September-October about one year in five. By contrast, the three months ending in October had rainfall above normal, and the last nine month period had rainfall well above normal. Most other periods, up to 48 months, have been slightly drier than normal. Just 2 mm extra per month would have made these last four years wetter than normal.
