Warm Nights in Summer 2009-10

Weather log summer 2009-10

No warm spell this summer matched that of late November, which had four days over 40°. There was only one 40° day all summer. By February there were no warm spells.
Summer began hot and very dry, with clear skies and low humidity. Year’s end saw days of rain, low cloud and extremely high humidity. In mid-January the air was again very dry, but cool.

The mean daily maximum temperature was normal, but the mean minimum (18.7°) was the highest in eleven summers. The number of nights warmer than 20° (34) is also the highest, nearly twice the usual number.
The total rainfall of 190 mm is below the long-term summer average of 225 mm. It is in the 42nd percentile.
At 42% cloudy mornings, this summer was very cloudy, but not extremely cloudy like the summer of 2007-08 (53%). These summers shared the record for completely overcast mornings, with 18 each.

Cloudy skies kept most June nights warm. A cold snap took the minimum on the 12th down to -3.2°. As in June 2005, there were only 5 frosts, compared with 13 normally. Few days were very warm or cool, but the 11th reached only 12.1° (6° below normal). There was patchy fog in the valley on three mornings.
Ten rain days brought 36.4 mm. The wettest was the 22nd, with 13.2 mm.

This June was very cloudy: 60% of the mornings had more than 4 octas of cloud. June 2005 (53%) and June 2007 (60%) were similar. The 11-year trend shows a big rise in June cloudy mornings: from 6 in 1999 to 16 in 2009!

The mean daily maximum temperature was normal for June. However, the mean daily minimum (5.9°) was the highest for the decade, beating other Junes that had warm nights: 2005 (5.7°) and 2008 (5.4°). The month’s mean temperature was high (like last June) and the temperature range low (12.1°). The mean humidity (early morning dew point) was also high.
The rainfall total of 36 mm is on the median (50th percentile) for June. Rainfall totals for groups of months up to six months are below the median, indicating shortages. However, even the worst is not serious: the four-month rainfall March to June (117 mm) is on the 14th percentile. Rainfall totals for longer periods up to 72 months are all above the median, except for the 36-month total, which is on the 49th percentile.

Weather log June 2008

Most of June was very warm. The 7-day average temperature stayed three degrees above normal for the first three weeks. All five rain days came during that time. The first, with 38.2 mm, was the wettest June day in a decade. By the 4th of the month the average rainfall for June (44 mm) had already been beaten. Sadly, the total rose only to 65.2 mm, the same as last year. Around the rainy days the nights were about 7° warmer than usual, and humidity was high (morning Dew Points near 10°). There were frequent fogs, including one on Saturday the 7th that was widespread and thick, and lasted a long time.

The fourth week saw a return to normal June temperatures, with sunny cloudless days. Frosts came back, but there were only eight altogether instead of the usual thirteen.

This June was warm and humid. However, due to the cool, dry change in the fourth week, it was no warmer or more humid than June of 2005. The graph shows that June 2005 had very high rainfall. It was the sixth wettest June on record.

While this month had more cloud than usual, June last year was much cloudier, and had bitterly cold days – nearly five degrees colder! By contrast, sunny June 2006 had very cold nights, including 21 frosts.
The rainfall total of 65 mm is high. It is in the 78th percentile for June, and nearly twice the median value (36 mm).
The rainfall total for this May and June together (79 mm) is in the 38th percentile of two-monthly totals, while the three-monthly total (99 mm) is in the 23rd percentile. Being above the tenth percentile, these do not count as “serious” shortages of rainfall. The four-month total (101 mm) is a serious shortage: it is only in the 9th percentile. The five-month total is much better (in the 35th percentile). Rainfall totals for longer periods are all normal, that is, near the median.

October 2007 warm, with rain

October was very warm. All but four days had daily maximum temperatures above normal. Night time minima varied at first, and then settled on the warm side. As a result, the seven-day mean temperature was a couple of degrees above normal nearly all the time.

The month began in a dry spell that reached 50-days before good rain fell on the 12th. After that, there was another 12-day dry spell. The dry spells had clear skies, very low humidity, and high daily temperature ranges of around 20°.
By the end of the month, however, a lot of rain had fallen, totalling 52 mm. It fell mainly in four days, with 17 mm on the 26th. The final wet spell was uncomfortably humid.

This October was the warmest in nine years. Daily minima were 1.2° above average, daily means were 1.7° above average, and daily maxima were 2.3° above average. The high daily maximum value of 29.4° is usually seen in November, not October.

The rainfall of 52 mm was near the long-term average of 58 mm for October. Similar amounts fell in October 2005 and 2006. October 2000 had been wet (110 mm) and October 2002 dry (15 mm).
The total rainfall for the two months ending in October 2007 was rather low compared to the same two months in other years. At 54 mm, it was on the 19th percentile: that is, there has been less than 54 mm rainfall in September-October about one year in five. By contrast, the three months ending in October had rainfall above normal, and the last nine month period had rainfall well above normal. Most other periods, up to 48 months, have been slightly drier than normal. Just 2 mm extra per month would have made these last four years wetter than normal.
