Cool, cloudy, rainy, humid weather at New Year soon gave way to warm sunny, humid weather. On the 19th temperatures and humidity fell very low, but the next days were hot. Storms marked the final week.
Nine rain days yielded 59.0 mm, with 19.8 mm registered on the 2nd.

“Normal Temperature”

Each monthly weather graph has dashed curves to show the temperatures that are normal for each day of the year. They are harmonic curves matching 10-year averages from March 1999. On this January graph, the highest values are marked with a double “X”. Summer heat is due to the sun, which can give most heat on the 21st of December (the summer solstice). On that day the sun is highest and shines the longest. However, it takes many days for the air to warm up. On average, the hottest day in Manilla comes 30 days later (January 20th) and the hottest night 41 days later (January 31st). All average values except rainfall are near normal for the month.
The rainfall total of 59.0 mm is in the 40th percentile, rather lower than the median for January (75 mm). Most totals for more than one month are still good. Even the 9-month total (now 339 mm) has risen to the 15th percentile.

Weather log January 2009

January was a bit on the dry side. Otherwise, it was close to normal, like December. Not only were the mean temperatures perfectly normal: there were few hot or cold days or nights.
The percentage of cloudy mornings (39%) was rather high and the number of cloud-free mornings (5) very low.
Four of the five rain days came in one short spell from the 21st, the 22nd having 30.8 mm. This spell was extremely humid, with Dew Points above 17°, typical of stormy weather. The evening of the 24th had a magnificent lightning display. Many storms, far and near, could be seen at once. Every second or two, flashes lit up the towers of cumulonimbus clouds from many different directions, or from inside.

Normal temperatures this month contrast with last January’s low values and the high values of the two before that.
The rainfall total (57.6 mm) was in the 39th percentile for the month. Although this is well below the January average of 87 mm, rainfall totals for groups of months remain very high. The four-month total, for example, is in the 91st percentile. Totals are still above the median for all periods up to 72 months, with the exception of the 36-month total, which has fallen to the 41st percentile.
Some January rainfalls in this decade were extreme. January 2006 (181 mm) was the eleventh wettest ever, and January 2003 (12 mm) was the third driest.

Very cool January 2008

The month began sunny and dry, but two degrees cooler than usual. Three rainy days beginning on the fifth brought high humidity and one daily maximum temperature as low as 24.4°. This is 9.2° below normal! Eight fine days followed, with normal January temperatures.

With a second rainy spell from the 17th to the 21st, days were again remarkably cool: five days were more than 8° below normal. In the dry fine weather that followed, all temperatures – maximum, minimum, and mean – were even lower than when the month began. They slowly rose to normal by the end of the month.
Humidity was normal for January: the morning Dew Point was 10° to 12° in the dry spells and 18° in wet spells, giving an average of 14.2°.
Rain fell on nine days. The wettest day, the 17th, had 17.2 mm, and the total was 65.8 mm.

This January had the coolest days in nine years, and the second coolest mean temperature. This month’s mean daily maximum (31.0°) was 2.9° below the nine-year average (33.9°), and an astonishing 4.4° below last year’s figure (35.4°). Because the mean maximum was low and the mean minimum was not, the mean daily temperature range this month (13.7°) was also low.

Using Dew Point to measure humidity, January and February are Manilla’s most humid months. This month’s mean morning Dew Point of 15.3° is normal.

With 39% of mornings having more than 4 octas of cloud, this was a cloudy month, but not as cloudy as December (58%) or November (50%).
The total monthly rainfall of 65.8 mm is 21 mm short of the long-term January average. However, total rainfalls for the last 2, 3, and 4 months are all above the 80th percentile.
