Dry, Warm August 2013

The month had no extremes of heat or cold. Frosts (10) were almost as rare as in August 2011 (9). Some overcast skies came with 5.8 mm of rain on the 17th then, from the 25th, there were five cloudless mornings bringing very warm weather. Altogether, only three days had rain (usually 6).

After July having temperatures two degrees above normal, this month’s maximum was only one degree up, and the minimum just on normal. While the air was not as extremely dry as it was last August, the morning dew point was still very low: 2.7 degrees below normal. In contrast, the subsoil temperature remained extremely high, at 16.6°, 2.7° above normal.
Total rainfall is far below the average of 39.5 mm. At 6.4 mm, it is in the 9th percentile: since 1888, only 10 August months have been drier. In totals for two months and more, there is no serious shortage of rainfall, although nearly all totals up to 18 months are now below the median. Totals for all longer periods (up to 360 months) are above the median.

Most days were warm and sunny, but there were cold, cloudy days from the 14th to the 24th, and three of them had a little rain. By the end of the month, there had been only 26.6 mm of rain in 90 days.
There were five frosty mornings, which is normal.

The mean maximum temperature was half a degree high and the mean minimum half a degree low. The mean early morning dew point (2.6°) showed low humidity, but it was not as low as the May record of 0.8° set last year. There were far more cloudy mornings (42%) than usual (24%), but fewer than in 2010 or 2011 (48%). The subsoil was 2.4° warmer than normal: its autumn cooling remained three weeks late.

The rainfall total of 13.6 mm was far below the average of 40.3 mm, but May has less rain than that in 23% of the years. Furthermore, Manilla’s May rainfall has been low for many years: in this century, only May 2011 (43.2 mm) beat the long-term average.
The two month total of 18 mm is now a severe shortage: in the 3rd percentile.

In April the raw value of maximum temperature anomaly became high and (indicating aridity) those of rainfall, dew point, and minimum temperature extremely low, and that of temperature range extremely wide. Cloud remained normal, and subsoil temperature high.

Fully-smoothed data points (red) for October 2012 continued to move towards higher maximum temperature, but scarcely moved further towards drought.

Summer 2012-13 hot in parts

Weather log summer 2012-13Summer was marked by a heat wave in January, similar to that in November 2009. It was not quite so hot, except that the hottest day set a 21st century record of 43.2°. The season also began very hot, but there were other times that were very cool, especially in February.

Twelve days had exceptionally low humidity, below 10%, with a record low value of 4% on 11th January.
There were 22 rain days, which is normal.

In contrast to the very low temperatures last summer, this summer’s temperatures were normal. At 37% cloudy mornings, this summer was a bit cloudier than normal (31%). Morning dew points set a new summer record low of 12.2°, beating the record set last year.
The rainfall total of 260.6 mm beats the average of 228 mm. It is in the 65th percentile.Climate summer 2012-13.

Droughty Spring 2012

Weather log Spring 2012.Temperatures rose as normal this spring, apart from a quick rise in the last week and a cold spell in the second week of October. In the cold spell, one day failed to reach 14°! Rain fell nearly every week, but never more than 15 mm in a day.

After last spring’s record-breaking 432 mm rainfall, this spring was about as droughty as spring 2002. The rainfall total, 81 mm, was a bit higher than in spring 2002 (66 mm) and the percent of cloudy mornings higher (25% vs. 19%), but the dew point (humidity) was much lower (3.7° vs. 5.4°) and the daily temperature range was higher (17.9° vs. 17.1°).
Showers in the last days lifted the total rainfall (81 mm) to the 10th percentile for springs.Climate spring 2012.
