April 2012 cloudy and wet

The daily weather logWeather log April 2012.

Most days had normal temperatures, but several were cool and overcast. Cold nights came during sunny spells, the coldest, on the 11th, being nine degrees below normal, but not a frost. Rain totalling 58.2 mm fell on seven rain days, mainly late in the month, with a maximum reading of 14.2 mm on the 24th.

All the mean temperatures were near normal, except that subsoil temperature was the highest for April on this record: 2.1 degrees above normal.

There were more cloudy days than recorded in earlier Aprils.
The rainfall total of 58.2 mm is well above the April average of 39.3 mm: it is in the 80th percentile. The total for March and April taken together (73.6 mm) is exactly on the average. As in March, totals for periods from five months to twenty-four months are still near record high values, and no totals up to the thirty-year total are below normal.

Most of the April 2011 raw data values (in orange), other than daily maximum temperature, are now on the “droughts” side of normal rather than the “flooding rains” side, which had dominated for about a year.

Smoothed October values include new 12-year record anomalies for daily maximum temperature (low) and cloudy days (high).

April weather cooled as usual, except that the second week was rather cooler, by day and by night. There were no frosts.
Most days had little cloud. There were six rain days (usually four), with the highest reading 17.4 mm on the 11th.

Mean temperatures were close to average. It was a very sunny month, with only 20% cloudy mornings (>4/8 cloud). April 2005 had been even sunnier, with only one cloudy morning.

The rainfall of 31.6 mm is on the 50th percentile for April: it is on the median – half of all Aprils have been wetter and half have been drier – but below the long-term average (39.3 mm). Rainfall totals for 5, 6, 9, and 12 months remain very high: above the 70th percentile.

April 2010 rather warm and dry

Although the month began with normal temperatures and some rain, the third week became warm, and gardens dried out. On the 26th 9.6 mm of rain was recorded, bringing the monthly total to 22.2 mm in four rain days (the usual number). The month ended sunny with nights that were cooler, but far from frosty.

This April was rather warm and dry, but not nearly as warm and dry as April 2005. That month was three degrees warmer than normal and had only 1.6 mm of rain! It had just one cloudy morning, compared to thirteen this month.

The rainfall of 22.2 mm is in the 36th percentile for April, below the long-term average of 38 mm. Rainfall totals for groups of months have fallen, but there are still no serious shortages.. The 12-month total (448 mm) is now down to the 11th percentile: just above the “serious” level.

Weather log April 2009

For weekly average temperatures, the month began warm, due to warm nights. Normal temperatures followed until, in the last days, cold dry winds arrived from the Southern Ocean, driving temperatures several degrees below normal. At the end, days were 20° and nights 4°, but there were no frosts.
Twelve point four millimetres of rain on the 4th was the first reading over 5 mm in 46 days. Rather more rain followed a humid, overcast spell at Easter: 36.0 mm fell on the 14th. The month’s total was 53.8 mm. There were seven Rain Days, twice as many as usual.

Of the monthly mean temperatures, only the nights were warmer than normal. The daily temperature range was rather low. This related to a high mean Dew Point and skies more cloudy than usual for April.

April last year was much cooler, and April 2005 much warmer.
The rainfall total (53.8 mm) was in the 76th percentile for the month. This is above the April median (33 mm), and over twenty times the most common April reading (2 mm). The two-month total for March and April (62 mm) is on the 26th percentile: not a serious rainfall shortage, as happened last year (22 mm; 4th percentile).Beyond the two-month figures, totals are still above the median for all periods up to 72 months, except for the 36-month total, which has risen again to the 47th percentile.
