Testing Soil Strength

A trench shows firm “shale” at 600 mm. This rock is a bedded volcanic mudstone of the Baldwin Formation. It was laid down on the deep sea floor of a Lower Devonian island arc 370,000,000 years ago. These beds dip down to the west at 30 degrees, and the top metre is softened by weathering.
